New Zealand has been bringing the goods with pinot gris of late and the Waipara Valley on the South Island is a bit of a hot spot for it. Less than an hour north of Christchurch, this wine region is protected from the ocean winds by the Teviotdale hills, allowing for warm air to come down from the nrthwest. The soils are diverse, ranging from gravel to limestone to loam. The long hot autumn just ahead of harvest ensures full ripening and bright, concentrated flavours in the wines. This gris from Sherwood Estate boasts a nose of pear, nectarine and stone fruits which all carry over to the palate. It’s quite dry with a light touch of acid on the finish to ensure easy pairing with a range of foods.
