Julia Hill Merlot

$10.49

Winery Overview Julia Hill is known for crafting reliable, expressive reds that showcase the best of South Australias wine regions. The winery works closely with established growers across Coonawarra, choosing vineyards that consistently deliver depth, balance and strong varietal character. Julia Hils winemaking style focuses on quality fruit, gentle handling and thoughtful oak use. The goal is straightforward wines that feel polished, flavourful and easy to enjoy, whether youre opening a bottle mid-week or pairing it with a special meal. Their Merlot is made with the same care as their bigger reds, offering softness, richness and a smooth, rounded finish. Region and Vintage Conditions This Merlot comes from Coonawarra, a region known for its cool climate, terra rossa soils and consistently high-quality reds. The 2021 growing season was ideal, dry conditions, well-timed rainfall and steady ripening. These conditions helped the fruit build flavour, colour and natural balance, making it a very strong year for Merlot. Source Grapes are sourced from Coonawarra vineyards selected for producing Merlot with ripe black cherry flavours, smooth tannins and good depth. These vineyards deliver fruit with both richness and a fresh, lifted character. Winemaking The wine was aged in oak barrels to add complexity, warmth and texture. The oak brings subtle spice and creates a more rounded mouthfeel without masking the fruit. Overall, the winemaking approach aims to highlight Merlots natural softness while adding structure and depth. Tasting Notes Appearance Deep crimson with a dark red-black hue. Aroma Fragrant cherry plum notes with a savoury edge. Palate Rich black cherry, gentle leathery notes and silky smooth tannins. The wine has a rounded, full mouthfeel and finishes softly. Finish Smooth, warm and carried by dark cherry and subtle savoury notes. Key Characteristics Rich cherry and dark fruit flavours Silky, smooth tannins Rounded, full mouthfeel Soft, approachable style with gentle complexity Food Pairing Great with roast pork, lamb dishes, tomato-based pasta, chargrilled vegetables or a simple cheese board. Its a versatile Merlot that works well with both hearty meals and relaxed weeknight dinners.
