This is a pretty damn cool wine. The grapes come off the 75-year-old War Horse vineyard in the Vale. These are gnarly old dry grown vines that have to push their roots through two layers of ironstone (hence the name) to reach their nutrients. This causes extremely low yields and an extremely high cocentration of flavour. The wine sees 50% new French oak in large 600 litre puncheons, providing some texture, spice and structure to complement the fruit component that’s driven by older oak ageing. The nose expresses raspberry, pomegranate and cedar, while the palate adds cranberry, red currant, nutmeg and Christmas pudding. The wine is dense and delicious, yet bright and lively. Not too shabby for the fruit of some old gnarly vines.
