The Toro region's grape is the Tinta de Toro, a dark, tough-skinned variety from the Tempranillo family and one of the very few to resist the phylloxera blight that ravaged European vineyards in the late 19th century. Sometimes called "the blackest of black grapes", the Tinta de Toro s only found in this part of Spain. Its small berries are rich in tannin and, when picked at optimal ripeness, have exceptionally concentrated fruit flavours.
