How’s this for ‘off the beaten track’? This delightful gris comes rom French island, off the coast of Victoria. It’s the very rugged, largely undeveloped island north of Phillip Island, reachable only by ferry, in Western Port bay. The whole island has a population of around 119 according to the 2016 census, though only about 60 of them are permanent residents. They’re off the grid, and don’t have much in the way of amenities at all. It’d be tough for us city dwellers to live there at all, let alone make wine! And yet these guys have done it. And pretty damn well at that. It’s a classic gris in terms of flavour, full of ripe pears and stonefruit, with a lovely crisp acidity to keep things fresh. It’s incredible value for money to boot, especially considering where it comes from.
