Tell you what, it wasn’t a bad start to the day. Three of the finest dessert-style rieslings the world has to offer, and someone even brought the blue cheese. And when you think about the incredible risk and manual labor that go into these wines, it’s flabbergasting. They’re one of those wines that easily commands the extra money asked. To start with, the risk in the vineyard is great - you might get the right type of rot (‘Noble Rot’, or botrytis cinerea) in the vineyard, or it might all go pear-shaped and write off the whole vintage. Luckily, 2017 provided the goods. Then there’s the labour. These wines aren’t just hand-picked. In the case of the trockenbeerenauslese, they even hand-select individual berries! That’s how you get pretty much perfect scores, mofos. And the intensified, semi-dried grapes are painstakingly pressed for minuscule yields of rare, golden liquid.
