Upon release in 2013, reviewers called this wine savoury, light and rustic. Given five years more in bottle, and we’re approaching comparisons-to-Burgundy territory. Approaching. But this. Is. Sparta. Jokes, it¢â‚¬â„¢s Martinborough. That means structure rules the show here, along with funk and rusticity. An exploration in subtle flavour is your mission. There’s a charry oak background, a bit of that roasting coffee bean aroma, with layers of red berry, cherry, mint, spice - but the main attraction’s all about truffles and mushroom and forest floor, soft textural tannins and bright acidity. I’d be curious to line this up next to a seven year old Morey St Denis, and discuss. It wouldn’t be a horrible night...
